ROGUE ELEPHANT.
Causes Havoc in Indian Village. A PRICE ON ITS HEAD. CALCUTTA. July 29. A notorious tusker rogue elephant of immense size, which had been “ wanted ” by the authorities for many months, appeared in the foothills near Darjeeling last night and knocked down a village, scattering the tea garden coolies far and wide. An invalid woman, who was unable to escape, was crushed to death. The elephant, wrhich is known as “ Clubfoot/' is cunning to a marked degree. It is expected that the latest escapade w’ill prove its undoing, as a price will be put oil its head, thus attracting shikaris (game hunters) to dispatch it. Not Air-minded. LONDON, July 23. Unrest is spreading among the elephants, declares the game warden of Uganda in his annual report. He explains that Uganda can accommodate more than half the elephant population in uninhabited and uninhabitable country, but aircraft above these empty lands may cause the elephants to seek quiet elsew’here. Already it is noticed that the annual mustering of the majestic old bulls on the east Nile has ceased for three years, while the main herds’ wanderings indicate their discomfort. Moreover, as trained elephants in the Belgian Congo are unable to become accustomed to the noise of motor-cars, the probabilities are against Uganda elephants learning to browse peacefully on busy air routes. Huge herds, seeking peace, may try to enter settled areas.
