BAND CONTEST.

Provincial Association’s Competitions. The competitions under the auspices of the Canterbury Provincial Bands Association for sojos, duets, trios and quartets were begun last evening at the Y.M.C.A. Concert Hall. It is the first contest of the kind to be promoted by the association, and was inaugurated for the purpose of encouraging individual playing among the bandsmen. An innovation is the section for bagpipe music. Keen interest is indicated by the large number of entries received, and a successful contest is assured. The arrangements have been well carried out under the association executive, headed by Mr J. Noble (president). The secretary is Mr R. B. Hean. The brass and woodwind judges are Messrs A. Schnack (Christchurch), W. 11. Osborne (Timaru) end J. Noble (Christchurch), while the pipe sections will be adjudicated by Pipe-Majors J. Patterson, J. M’Lachlan and- D. Wilson. The tenor horn and B-flat clarinet solos and the duets were decided last night, when some excellent playing was heard, and a good standard was maintined throughout. In his remarks on the tenor solo, the judge, Mr A. Schnack, said that the playing was good, and he considered that the winning performance of “Silver Threads” (Rimtner) was really fine. Again in the duets the winners’ rendering of “ Watchman, What of the Night?” (Sargeant) was outstanding. Some of the other duets did not blend well. Mr J. Noble judged the clarinet section, and had no difficulty in deciding the winner,'who played “O Lovely Night” (Round). Results are as follow: TENOR HORN. F. J. Turner (Woolston), 96 points 1 J.
