JVOTFS AND NEWS FROM EVERYWHERE

'P'HE FIRST RACE at Riccarton on Tuesday will start at 11.35 a.m. * afs * * Reports from YVoodyille state that Beacon Fire has gone on well in his preparation and is in tip top order. * * * * The tracks at Riccarton to-morrow morning will be open until 10 a.m. DOLE SOLD TO SYDNEY. Dole, winner of the Champion Two-year-old Plate, has been sold by Mr B. H. Edkins, of Wellington, to Mr Allen Lewis, of Sydney, and he was shipped to Sydney by "the Wanganella on Thursday. The price has not been disclosed. Dole holds no known classic nominations. He is a colt by Paper Money from the imported mare by Franklin, son of Volta. He was bred at the Elderslie Stud and was bought at the Trentham sales by Mr Edkins for 75 guineas. Dole is engaged in the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap at 7st 131 b. * * :fr * Heroic, himself a rich chestnut, has sired a grey colt. The origin of his colour is clear enough as the youngster in out of Fairy Elk, who is by the grey Chrysolaus, a son of Roi 'Herode. GOOD RIDING RECORD. A. E. Ellis has a fine riding record in the principal events run at the C.J.C. August meeting. He won the Grand National Steeplechase on Snowfall in 1931, the Grand National Hurdle race on Penurv Rose in 1925 and on Wharncliffe in 1927, and the Winter Cup on Toxeuma in 1930, also on Fast Passage in 1932. FROM HOKITIKA. Monipere was trained by T. H. Gillett when he made his first appearances last season and ran unplaced twice at Riccarton. He belongs to Mr W. Jeffries of Hokitika and the owner took charge of him later when he raced on the West Coast. Monipere ran twice at Hokitika at Christmas. He was fourth in the Maiden Handicap and second in the Novice to Scarlet Pimpernel. He was not produced again until Easter when in his only start he won the Trial, 5$ furlongs, at Hokitika from Silver Sight and Lady Valkyrie. Monipere is a bay gelding by Arrowsmith from Note by Paper Money from Elaine by Birkenhead from Camelot by Sir Lancelot from Trentalto by Trenton. He is engaged in the Cashmere Plate on Tuesday.

K. Voitre will ride Lady Zephyr in the Cashmere Plate on Tuesday. G. STEEPLECHASE RIDERS. The riders in the Grand National Steeplechase on Tuesday will be:— Billy Boy, D. J. Burgess; Makeup, W. Rennie; Callamart, C. Thomson; Luna Lux, A. M Donald; Copey, D. O’Connor; Omeo, R. Beale; Lucess, T. Thompson; Thurina, A. E. Ellis; Peterette, V. Langford. High Commissioner was scratched at 7.30 p.m. yesterday for all his engagements at the Grand National meeting. TRENTHAM WINNERS. H. Pritchard, who trains for Mr W. H. Ballinger, was the most successful of the Trentham trainers last season, so far as the number of wins is concerned, though they were mostly minor events. He won fourteen races, S. J. Reid being next for Mr V. Riddiford with thirteen. C. Pritchard and J. T. Young each had eight winners, D. M’Cauley seven, and A. Goodman and W. Hawthorne six each. FOR PAKURANGA. Winnagan, who won the Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Foxton meeting last Saturday, is an aged gelding by Birkdale, and recently scored in the Manawatu Hunt Cup at Awapuni. He is trained by L. G. Morris at Marton and is among those entered for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup at Ellerslie this month. PROMISING SORT. Hunting Mars is evidently a good sort, judging by his three successes at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting last week —the Maiden Race, Trial Handicap and Turanganui Plate—and he should do better in much more select company this season. He is now a four-vear-old gelding, by Hunting Song from Marsula, a mare by Field Battery from Holyrood. Holyrood .is an imported mare and is the dam of Holymond, who produced Holly Lu. racing in Mr T. Impey’s colours. Marsula is also the dam of Bobella, who in turn produced Singleton, Going Up and New Moon. ❖ * * Additional riding engagements for next week’s racing at Riccarton include the following: S. Wilson, Cylinder, Bay Tree and Cyclonic; W. Rennie, Makeup; G. Duncan, Pharetra and Korero; Iv. Voitre, Normandy and Foreign Queen; W. PI. Story, High Rank; A. M’Donald, Luna Lux and Henry of Navarre; V. Langford, Polling Day; C. Eastwood, Tea Garden. ❖ * * * The withdrawal of Hurlingham from the Winter Cup left L. J. Ellis without a mount in that race, but his services have since been secured for Cottesmore. ABOUT QUEBEC. Quebec, who is an acceptor for the Cashmere Plate on Tuesday, is a three-year-old gelding and is a half-brother by Lord Quex to Gay Court. His dam, Polonaise, is an Australian-bred mare by Rossendale from Naarilla, by Malt King from Perilla (English) by Polymelus. He is trained at Trentham by H. J. Benge for Mr H. J. Harman. Last season Quebec had seven races. He was unplaced in the first four and then ran three thirds. At Pahiatua early in April, he occupied that placing in a six furlong Trial Plate. At the Wairarapa meeting at Easter, Quebec was beaten by Lady Nan and Quietly on the first day and by Quietly and April Fool on the second, both races being run over six furlongs. H. J. Wiggins will ride Quebec on Tuesday. COME DOWN IN THE WORLD. Cylinder is not the only classic winner engaged at Riccarton on Tuesday. Another is Paleta and the fact that the last named has the- minimum in the Jumpers’ Flat race tells its own story. Paleta began his racing career brilliantly. That was as a two-year-old in the 1926-27 season. After one unplaced run, he won his remaining four races. In the last of these, he beat Laughing Prince at level weights (9.5) while among the unplaced w r ere Don Jose 7.6 and Historic 7.4. As a three-year-old, he was runner-up in the Hawke s Bay Guineas and won the Great Northern Guineas from In the Shade. He was unplaced in two other sprints and then in two handicaps at the New Zealand Cup meeting of 1927. He did not race again until May, 1930. He had five starts that season, winning once. Paleta was off the scene again in the 1930-31 season and he had only two unplaced runs in 1931-32. He did not race last season until Easter when he was second over six furlongs at Waipukurau. He was unplaced in two other sprints and then ran fourth in a mile event. Another unplaced performance on the flat preceded his appearance over hurdles at Napier Park in June when he finished fourth and last. At Trentham last month he ran third in both the Vittoria and Corunna Hack Hurdles. In the latter, he had 9.2 and Sir Musk 9.0 won from Hounslow 10.3 while Gold Knight 11.3 was fourth. Paleta is by Leighton from Catalan! by Catmint. DOING GOOD WORK. The Kilbroiv ' gelding Kiltowyn is getting through a solid preparation at Ellerslie and is in great order to commence the new season. Recently he was responsible for a first-class gallop over a round on the No. 2 grass track, running the journey in time that compared favourably with any previous trials over the distance. Kiltowyn has been entered for the Auckland Handicap. one mile, to be run at the Pakuranga meeting, and if his owner elects to start the bay gelding in that event it will be difficult to select anything to beat him. IN WORK AGAIN. Arouse, the four-year-old gelding by Grand Knight from Wake Up, who is trained bv J. Brown at Hawera, has been brought in aeain after spelling for over twelve months. Arouse ran second to Pillow Fight in his first race, the Oroua Nursery Handicap, at Feilding. and his next race was in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, where he was injured, and has not raced since. Arouse was a good-looking two-year-old. and it is not surprising to that lie has grown into a remarkably fine horse. He is in good condition to commence another preparation, and if he stands up to his work he should win some races this season.
