News in Brief.

A Juror’s Excuse. Various excuses are offered by jurors when applying for exemption from service, or in explaining their tardiness in attending the Court at the proper time, but one man struck a new note when he arrived at the Supreme Court in Wellington some time after his name had been called. He said that he was a member of a city undertaking firm and he had had a call that morning. “In the hurry and bustle I must have forgotten all about coming here for the jury,” he explained. Crossing Bealey Ford. Added weight to the Canterbury Automobile Association’s demand for a bridge or punt at the Bealey ford, so as to make certain of a crossing being effected, was lent by the experience of the students who motored from Springfield to Arthur’s Pass to search for the missing climber, Edgar Russell. Heavy rains were having their effect on the Waimakariri when the motortruck arrived at the ford. There they were met by a team of horses supplied by Mr F. Cochrane, and it was a touch and go matter whether the animals were equal to the task. The crossing was accomplished only by the combined efforts of the students and the horses. Had the truck arrived an hour, or even half an hour later, a crossing might have been impossible.
