Canteen Fund Grant Received.

The executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association met last evening; present: The Rev F. T. Read (president), Messrs E. W. Smith, H. Fleck, G. Dabourn, A. H. Parlitt, R. M. Grant, W. E. Leadley, J. S. Chisholm, H. St A. Murray, T. L. Drummond, A. R. Emerson and E, F Willcox (secretary). The secretary reported that he had sent forward an application from one boy who desired to take advantage of the Flock House training scheme, and he had been advised that an application had been forwarded by the Ashburton Committee. A grant of £172 for the relief of distress due to unemployment was received from the Canteen Funds Board. The grant was for the month of May and was allocated on the basis of 6118 l'egistered unemployed in Christchurch, out of a total of 53,382 in the Dominion. The delay in the payment of the grant was due to the board having experienced considerable difficulty in disposing of investments. A lengthy circular was received from Dominion headquarters of the association advising that the Unemployment Board was taking steps to arrange for the medical examination of and completion of an agreement by all those on relief works who had any physical disabilities. The circular was referred to the Employment Committee for consideration. The employment officer reported that the number of registrations in the fortnight ended on July 29 was 635. including sixteen new registrations. A total of 2882. days' work had been provided on a subsidv basis at a cost of £9O 6s sd, and eleven days’ work had been found without subsidy. The. Benevolent Committee reported that it had granted 125 applications for relief, and had issued 103 bags of coal and seventy-five parcels of meat. An offer by the Harmonic Society to give a concert in aid of the funds of the association was accepted.
