FINE MUSICAL COMEDY.
Civic Offers “ There Goes the Bride.” *
Humour of the effervescent kind, good and wholesome, makes “There Goes the Bride,” the latest attraction at the Civic Theatre, one of the best British musical comedies shown in Christchurch in recent times. The picture goes with a swing from the first scene to the last hilarious episode. The dialogue has been cleverly thought out and gems of wit fall thick and fast to keep pace with the rapid action and romance of the piece. The events are crowded into twenty-four hours, during which time a young woman, about to be led to the altar, jilts a bridegroom, causes ‘he breaking of an engagement between another young couple, and falls in love. Jessie Matthews, as a runaway French bride, gives a splendid characterisation and belies any suggestion that the British film stars lack that “ pep ” so essential to make a comedy go with a bang. The first portion of the programme is varied and interesting.
