GANDHI IN MONASTERY.
Leaves Politics for Life of Prayer. \LCUTTA, July 22. Gandhi ast* . shed India to-day by suddenly going into a monastery near Ahmedabad (Gujerat), a move which is taken to mean that he has decided to give up politics and devote the rest of his life to meditation and prayer. When he left the same monastery in March, 1930, to commence the famous march to the salt tanks at Dandi, he announced that he would never return until 'lndia had gained complete independence. There is no doubt that Gandhi realises that the bulk of the country is against him in his decision that civil disobedience should continue. Political leaders and newspapers all over the country declare that thero is no excuse for civil disobedience, and Gandhi, seeing his influence waning, probably has decided to make ’ a strategic retreat. As a political force he is dead, but there is always a chance that he will think out a new scheme and emerge again from his retirement. He may yet be heard of as a spiritual leader.
