Mr Justice Blair was a passenger for Wellington last night. Mr R. O. Duncan left for Wellington last night. Mr F. D. Muirscn has been elected president of the Christchurch Bowling Centre. Messrs E. A. Porritt and W. C. Murray (Wellington) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs G. F. Youngs (Auckland), W. W. Allan. E. A. Shrimpton and K. M. Wilton (Wellington) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Messrs A. G. Justice, J. Carlton, L. Williams (Dunedin) and N. Grounsell (Auckland) are staying at the New City Hotel. Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls, Officer Commanding Southern Command, and Major E. Puttick, general staff officer, returned to Christchurch from Nelson last evening. Messrs W. D. M’Kay and R. A. Lock (Melbourne), G. Robertson and B. van Staveren (Wellington) and H. T. Merritt (Auckland) are staying at the United Service Hotel.Mr F. J. T. Grigg. Government Analyst for Canterbury and Westland, left Christchurch last night to attend a conference of dairy research chemists at Palmerston North. Mr George Millar, the Deputy State Advances Superintendent, was in Christchurch to-day. He proceeds to Dunedin to-morrow on departmental business. Mr R. H. Billens, managing director of the Manawatu Daily Times Cornpan}', Palmerston North, spent the week-end in Christchurch. He left for Dunedin this morning. A motion of condolence with Mr T. Carey in the death of his father was passed at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Football League last night. Sir Charles Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning, and left for the south by the express. Messrs R. A. Campbell and R. Hepburn, newly elected members of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, were cordially welcomed by the board at its meeting yesterday. Mr C. T. Aschman was re-elected chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College at a meeting of the board held yesterday. Mr A. E. Flower was elected deputy-chairman. The Christchurch Bowling Centre, at its annual meeting last evening, passed a motion of sympathy with the president, Mr C. J. Morrison, who was unable to attend the meeting owing to illness. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Rev Samuel Lawry was passed at a meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors at its meeting yesterday. Mr Lawry was an ex-member of the board. At the last meeting of the Canterbury Master Butchers’ Association, Messrs F. Meakin, J. Skelton and T. Hyde were appointed delegates to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand conference of master butchers to be held at Wellington during September. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. Ilinton was passed by the Christchurch branch of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association at its first meeting last evening. Mr Hinton, a former pupil and master of the school, died recently abroad. The congratulations of the Christchurch branch of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association were extended last evening to Dr E. Thomson, of the staff of the Christchurch Public Hospital, who has been appointed to a position as a bacteriologist in Sydney. Dr Thomson stated that he would be leaving in three weeks time.

Captain J. 11. S. Macdonald, of the Mersey Paper Company, Nova Scotia, travelled from the south by the night express on Sunday, and was a passenger by last night’s ferry steamer for Wellington. He will leave New Zealand for Liverpool. Nova Scotia, the headquarters of the company, by the Makura on August S. Mr S. Hollander will leave Christchurch in about a fortnight to take up a position in Auckland with the National Mutual Life Assurance Association. Mr Hollander is president of the Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association, which he represents on the Canterbury Rugby Union; president of the Canterbury Amateur Swimming Association; president of the Elmwood Swimming Club; and vice-captain of the High School Old Boys’ Football Club.
