After winning their early rounds easily, all four of the Australian Davis Cup players were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the British hard court championship, played at Bournemouth. The Australians were unaccustomed to the sandy courts and all made mistakes, which they are unlikely to repeat so frequently when they have been fully acclimatised. Results were:— Perry defeated Quist, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. Lee beat M’Grath, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Austin beat Turnbull, 5-7, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Hughes defeated Crawford, 6-8, 6-2 6-0, 4-6, 9-7.
