New Competition to Begin on Saturday. PRIZES OF £2O FOR PROVERBS. Draughts, ludo and singing round the piano are family amusements that have languished greatly in recent years and new ways of passing the long winter e\ T enings are always eagerly sought. The “ Christchurch Star ” is offering a new hobby that will prove entertaining and instructiA*e, and carry, as well, the possibility of rich reward. This great Pro\*erb Competition will begin on Saturday next, when the first of 45 puzzle pictures will be presented. The pictures will be published on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday of each week, beginning on Saturday next. The prize money totals £2O. This is a competition for all ages. Sweet seventeen and sil\’er-h£!red seventy have an equal chance of success. A lengthy list of proverbs will be published in the “ Christchurch Star ” on Saturday, and from this list must be selected the one most appropriate to the picture accompanying them. Competitors are requested to keep the list of.proverbs, which is applicable to all the pictures. Beneath each puzzle will be a space for the solution. Competitors will cut out the puzzle, write out the solution in the blank space beneath the picture, fill in the names and address, and retain the cutting till the series is completed. The whole batch, or as many as have been solved, should then be forwarded to the Proverb Contest Editor, “ Star ” Office, Christchurch. The competitor solving the greatest number of puzzles will receive a prize of £10; the second a prize of £3; the third of £2, while ten other prizes each of ten shillings will be offered—a total distribution of £2O. Entry is free and open to all except to members of the staff of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., and their families.
