HARBOUR BOARD.

Mr H. T. Armstrong Heads the Poll. Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P. (Labour) was the only candidate for the Lyttelton Harbour Board to be elected on the first preference count last night. That was the case also at the previous Harbour Board election. On each occasion he secured a huge total of first preference votes, and yesterday his total was 8510. The quota required for election will be about 5500 votes, and it is practically certain that the other sitting members— Messrs IT. M. Chrystall, H. Holland, M.P., and E. J. Howard, M.P.—will be returned on the transfer of votes. Mr A. A. M’Lachlan is 1257 votes behind Mr Howard, and is not at all likely to be elected through transfers from Messrs Chrystall and Holland, as Mr Howard will gain a large number of votes from Mr Armstrong. The allocation of first preference votes according to the parties was as follows:

Once again, the old council was returned, the defeated candidate being Mr T. J. Stokes. Mr Stokes was not a great deal behind. With one count to come in, that at Hanna’s store.
