Reaching a velocity of fifty miles an hour last night a southerly gale caused delays to shipping. Vessels entering port showed evidence of the buffeting they had received. Many small coastal steamers arrived an hour late, or are still sheltering. An officer of the Monowai described the trip across the Tasman as the worst in many months.
