HARD-COURT TENNIS

North Island Players Win Two Titles. TWO FINALS POSTPONED. Both the South Island men’s singles and women’s singles championships were won by North Island players when the hard-court tournament was continued at Wilding Park yesterday. C. E. Malfroy, of Wellington, won the men’s title, and Mrs H. M. Dykes, also of Wellington, won the women’s championship. Misses Irene and Thelma Poole claimed the women’s doubles championship. Owing to the failure of the light the finals c-f the men’s doubles, in which Seay and Malfroy were leading Wilson and Angas, 6-3, 9-7, 10-12, and the combined doubles were postponed until this afternoon. Weather conditions were excellent and the large gallery of spectators saw some very interesting tennis. The men’s singles final was notable for its strangely changing fortunes. In the first two sets c*f the match Malfroy’s play was practically a series of mistakes, while Angas’s was almost faultless. The third set saw a reversal. Malfroy made fewer mistakes and his varied attack, with accurate stroking, began to take effect. He improved the position in the fourth set, and in the final bout Angas was definitely in the defending position. Angas held on with his usual tenacity and won applause with beautiful stroking, but it seemed definitely that he was meeting a better player. His tactics and stroking were gc-od, but Malfroy had an answer for everything. From all parts of the court, with the exception of the back line, Mrs H. M. Dykes proved more than superior to Miss. Edn# Rudkin, of Canterbury, whom she met in the final of the women’s singles. Miss M. Wake and Mrs J. D. Carl seemed in like case against the Poole sisters in the final of the women’s doubles. Miss Wake’s serving and driving, and Mrs Carl's good work at the net, gave them the first set, but thereafter they played a game which was right intc* their opponents’ hands. Both the Poole Sisters are strong net players and throughout the last two sets they held control from that position. R. G. Pattlnson, the West Coast boy, who made such a good showing in the Canterbury championships, won the junior championship in good style. In the final he met J. T. M. Fisher, an experienced player of considerable ability, and won, 6-1, 6-3. He varied his game well and made few mistakes.

The final of the men’s doubles was at an exciting stage when, at 4.45 p.m., C. Angas appealed against the light and the tournament umpire, Mr J. Mercer, upheld him in spite of the protests of the opposing pair. In consequence Malfroy and Wilson had to postpone their return to Wellington last night. The postponement saved the abandonment of the combined doubles final, for Wilson and Malfroy would not have had time to play it after their other match. The failure to complete the tournament in the three days wxs not the fault of the tournament secretary, Mr J L. Squire, who had all sections well advanced. It resulted from the fact, that the same players were in so many of the finals, two of them five-set matches. Results were:CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. Men’s Singles. Final. C. E.
