Handicaps for the Ashburton Trotting Club will appear to-morrow morning, and acceptances will close at eight o’clock to-morrow night. Owners of present two-year-olds are reminded of the splendid opportunity afforded them by the enterprise of the Oamaru Trotting Club in putting on a New Zealand Derby Trial at its opening meeting, to be held on October 23 next. The race will be for then three-year-olds, to be decided over one mile and a quarter, and is worth 250 sovs. Entries will close on Friday, April 28 next, at 9 p.m. In instituting this race the club recognises that every encouragement must be given to breeders and owners, and it is for this very good purpose that the race has been included in the club’s spring programme. Should the patronage accorded this race be sufficient, it is possible that for future years the stake will be increased. TO-MORROW’S SALE. _ H. Matson and Co., on the occasion of their Annual Easter Sale of trotting stock, to be held to-morrow in Tattersalls, at 9 o’clock, will offer two excellent pacing geldings by Wrack (Imp.) from Noiseless (Imp.) Five brood mares will be sold by a local breeder owing to the shortage of feed. Entries will be received up till the time of sale. 4 WALLA WALLA’S SPEED. That evidently Walla Walla is in good order for the forthcoming Sydney Show is proved by the following clipping from the “ Post ” (Goulburn, N.S.W.) :—“During the afternoon, Mr L. S. Martin’s noted performer, Walla Walla, set a record for the new track at the Goulburn Show. Despite the presence of a light wind the Phar Lap of the trotting world moved at a smart rate over the two laps, which he covered in 1.20 4-5. The first lap was covered in 39sec, the track measuring three laps and 80yds to the mile. Walla Walla’s time for the two laps was equal to a 2.8* clip—a record likely to stand for some time. Walla Walla was paced hy Mr A. S. Pitty’s Coral.” This Goulburn newspapermay be regarded as a reliable authority.

STONYHURST STUD

Son of The Tetrarch is New Sire. Another well-bred English sire will be available in Canterbury for the next breeding season. This is the twelve-year-old Magnus, who has been secured for the Stonyhurst Stud by Sir Charles Clifford from his cousin, Captain Charles Moore, of Mooresfort Stud, a well-known Irish stud, in Tipperary. Magnus is by the unbeaten grey horse, The Tetrarch, sire of Chief Ruler and Tea Tray, from Princess Dorrie, by

Your Majesty from Doris. He was bred by Mr J. B. Joel and represents some of the most successful blood in his stud. Princess Dorrie, winner of the. One Thousand Guineas and Oaks, is a half-sister to Sunstar, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, while the Persimmon horse. Your Majesty, the sire of Princess Dorrie. is a St Leger winner. Magnus did a little racing and won a mile race at Newmarket as a three-year-old. He has had several seasons at Captain Moore’s stud in Ireland, where he has left some promising stock. He is expected to arrive here about September and he should be a valuable addition to the breeding stock of the Dominion. J M. SAMSON'S HORSES FOR SALE
