A POPULAR MINISTER.
Will not Leave the Halkett Charge.
When the parishioners of the Halkett Presbyterian charge heard recently that a call was coming from Waipukurau to their minister, the Rev Theo. Paterson, they met and expressed the unanimous hope that Mr Paterson would not leave the charge. When the call came before the Christchurch Presbytery to-day, Messrs D. Mulholland, G. Calder and J. D. Penny attended as commissioners from the Halkett charge to urge the wishes of the congregation that Mr Paterson should stay with them. The Rev D. K. Boyd, who introduced the commission, said that the meeting at Halkett had been very representative, and the decision was emphatic. Mr Mulholland said it was considered it would not be in the interests of the parish to allow Mr Paterson to go. The congregation would do all in its power to retain him.
Mr Calder said the Halkett congregation was unanimous in its wish to retain Mr Paterson.
Mr Paterson said he would not act against the wishes of the people of his charge. The Presbytery resolved that the call should not be placed in Mr Paterson s hands.
