RIFLE SHOOTING.
National Meeting Opens at Trentham. Per Press Association. TRENTHAM, March 8. Marksmen from all parts of the Dominion are competing at the annual four-day meeting of the National Rifle Association, which, opened at Trentham in fine weather trffS morning. The entry of 188 competitors is better than had been anticipated, the programme having been based on an attendance of 130 competitors. For the first time in the history of the association a woman—Mrs J. T. Lovell, of Blenheim—is competing. Mrs Lovell has competed at many district meetings with considerable success. Her husband is also a keen rifleman, and, although not competing, is visiting Trentham to watch his wife’s progress.
Fourteen ex-Belt winners, including last year’s winner of the King’s Prize (R. H. Nicholl, Petone), are competing. Compulsory service matches were completed early this afternoon, and a start was then made with the first match of the Belt series.
