Ladies’ Cricket Reps.

Dear Sir, —I should like to make some invited comment on the girls’ representative cricket team selected by “ Ashes ” in your Saturday’s issue. As one who has followed the games every Saturday, mav I state that I wholeheartedly agree with his picking of M. Richards, G. Mortimer (Argyle House). S. vS. Garner, B. Te Rangi, R. Cursons (Mai Moa). R. Symons (Technical), J. Webster (H.5.0.G.) and F. Campbell (Spreydon) keeper, and though the season's performances allow equal choice to K. Sullivan and E. Wells (H.5.0.G.), on both batting and bowling form, as to any’ of the remainder chosen bv 44 Ashes,” one wishes in no way to be critical, for only an intensive study of the averages could eventually decide this. As a left-hand bowler E. Dickson (Spreydon) deserves consideration.

It is in the matter of selection of captain that 44 Ashes ” is at fault—sadly. He gives the reasons for his choice of either M. Richards or M. Norman as 44 both of whom have level heads as cricketers.” Granted willingly—but it needs more than a level head to make a good skipper. I admire # Miss Richards as one of the best all-rounders in the competition, but she has experience this season as captain (Miss N. Neely' leading the Argyle House team), and her placing of the field for her bowling does not justify her being placed in this position. Miss Norman is skipper of Ballantynes. but the handling of this team definitely rules her out of consideration. Neither the placing of the field nor the handling of the bowling—the quite competent third bowler averaging only two overs out of about forty every Saturday—shows a tithe of the understanding shown by B. Te Rangi (Mai Moa), R. Symons (Technical), N. Forsyth (H.5.0.G.) or B. Fellowes (Spreydon). w'ho place their fieldsmen with rare judgment, and also know when to ring the changes with their bowlers and place the field correctly for each bowler. The selection of Misses Forsyth and Fellowes in the representative team is doubtful, but Misses Symons and Te Rangi cannot be overlooked. Which captains the side does not matter — each knows how to get the best out of herself and her team.—T am, etc., BY THEIR WORKS YE SHALL KNOW THEM.
