WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

Domestic Science Course Planned. One of the objects of the Women’s Institutes as stated in their constitution, is “to make provision for the fuller education and training of country women, and to give instruction and training In all braches of agriculture, rural handicrafts, domestic science, hvgiene and social welfare.” Much lias already been done in this direction, • •hiefly by individual institutes, but it is realised 'that the time has now come when the work must be carried out on a systematic basis and the best teachers available obtained, if the full object of the movement is to be attained. “ For Home and Country ” is the institute slogan, and so, as a st art, arrangements have been completed for • ourses of instruction in home science. Miss Violet M’Millan, B.H.Sc., is in .l arge of the work, and will operate throughout the Wellington, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay provinces. She expects to hold a meeting in connection with the scheme at Pahiatua this month This course should have valuable results. not only to the Women’s Institute movement, but to the c o un^ r -£ generally. It will probably be extended in the near future. Spotswood. Mrs Stevenson presided at the monthly meeting of the Spotswood Women’s Institute. The competition, “An article made from a cotton bag,” resulted in Mrs Stevenson being first and Mrs Craighead second. A collection of articles for Nurse Maude was handed in. and a demonstration with sewing machines was given. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdaines Craighead, Harrison and Stewart and Miss ID. Harrison. A vote of thanks was passed to the demonstrators. Hornby-Islington-Templeton. The monthly meeting of the Hornby- j Jslington-Templeton Women’s Institute

was held in the Parish Hall, Hornby. The president (Mrs Rugg) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The meeting took the form of a social afternoon, all members being the guests of the executive committee. Community singing and competitions made the afternoon pass pleasantly. A pianoforte solo was contributed by Miss Joyce Bush* and an exhibition of clubswinging was given by Maureen Scott. It was decided to hold a picnic at Coe's Ford. There were satisfactory results from a “ bring and buy ” stall held in aid of the institute funds. Afternoon tea was dispensed by members of the committee. The programme was in the hands of the Entertainment Committee. Lynton-Charwell Porks. Mrs Scales presided over a large attendance of members of the LyntonCharwell Forks Women’s Institute in the Cliarwell School. Nominations were taken for the committee for the coming year. There was an excellent display of summer blooms, the winners of the competition being Mrs Robertson (carnations) 1, Mrs Snushall (hydrangeas) 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Robertson and Hare. The annual meeting will be held in March.
