TROTTING NOTES.

j\ CCEPTANCES for the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting will close to-morrow at .5 p.m. * * * * Although no exacting tasks have been set the Manawatu pacer Whippet since he commenced training operations at Epsom, he is in great heart and each time he is assigned useful work he is keen to go faster. So far H. J. Woodfield has given him all unhoppled work, and he is quite at home without the straps. While he has shown better form over short courses, Whippet should go a journey as he is bred on staying lines, his side Azelzion being from the good brood mare Thelma, whose sons, Wildwood Junior and Waverlev, grandson, Author Dillon, and grand-daughter, Onyx, were high-class two miles performers. * * * * Gaza, who raced consistently well for L. Mahoney during the two previous seasons, is doing in approved style all that his new owner, E. E. Cressy, is asking him, and has now reached a stage in his preparation where he call be sent along in fast tests. Gaza has always been considered best at a mile, but last season he displayed improved .stamina by being placed over a mile and a half in 3.23 3-5. Gaza will be driven in his races at Auckland by C. Smith. NE W P ROG RAM ME, The Timaru Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme lor its autumn meeting to be held on Saturday, March 11. The principal event is the Timaru Trotting Cup of 230 sovs and a trophy to the value of 25 sovs presented by James Buchanan and Co., Ltd. It is for horses that can do 4.33 or faster, two miles. The chief sprint handicap is the Washdvke Handicap (harness), of 130 sovs. It is for horses that can do 2.47, one mile and a quarter. The Wai-iti Handicap (harness), will also-be decided over ten furlongs. It is a 2.55 class. The unhoppled trotters have the Kingsdown Handicap (harness), 100 sovs, class 4.11, one mile and five furlongs, and the Temuka Handicap (harness), which is for horses that can do smin or better. Other races are the Trial Handicap (harness), of 100 sovs, class 4.5, one mile and five furlongs; Seadown Handicap (harness), of 110 sovs, class 3.36, one mile and a half; and the Fairlie Handicap (harness), of 120 sovs. class 4.45, two miles. Nomfhations will close with the secretary, Mr H. H. Fraser, on Monday, February 27, at 9 p.m.

* * * * A lot of useful work was done on the Auckland Trotting Club’s track recently and several horses who will race at the coming meeting displayed satisfactory form. The chief feature was a fine mile and a half effort by Brentlight while at the same distance Pageant, Glandore, Kewpie’s Guy and Nellota also shaped well. Kewpie’s Triumph performed creditably over .two miles.

Pageant .ran solidly all the way to register 3min 27sec. After making the pace he hung on well when tackled by Kewpie s Guy and was still fighting gamely when Brentlight dashed up. Pageant and Kewpie’s Guv ran the last three l'urlongs in 50sec. In spite of a bad lapse in the early stages, Carnui ran the mile and a quarter in 2min 52sec. After settling down to his work he paced resolutely and came home the final half in lmin 6sec.

PAGEANT IMPROVES.

Pageant (M. Morrison) and Kewpie’s Guy (F. J. Smith) ran a mile and a half comfortably in 3min 38*sec. They were joined at the mile and a quarter by Carnui (C. Smith), who ran the journey in 2.59. There was not much speed on until the final section, when Pageant moved up to force the pace, and he just failed to head Carnui in the run to the line, registering lmin Ssec for the last half. The three pacers were given a repeat task in company with Brentlight. A CASUALTY. The consistent pacer, Dillon Logan, is nursing an injured leg due to hitting out while in his loosebox. He did it prior to racing at the February meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, but at the time it was not considered serious. The son of John Dillon and Belle Logan has had to be eased in his work. lie may be up and doing again in time for the New Brighton Club’s meeting. * * * * Brentlight (R. D. Kennerley) went away behind Pageant and Kewpie’s Guy and finished with them, running the mile and a half in 3min 25 2-ssec. Carnui acompanied them on the last mile and a quarter. Pageant set the pace early and was in front at the mile in 2.20. at which point Carnui had lost his position through tangling. Over the last quarter Carnui came fast and Brentlight made a forward move. Pageant and Kewpie’s Guy were fighting it out when Brentlight dashed through to finish with them, his last half showing lmin ssec. Brentlight put in great work in the concluding stages and his effort was impressive. HIS FORTE. Recognised as a master hand with “ has beens ” and speedy horses with an “ if ” in their character, N. C. Price is to try his ingenuity with the pacing gelding Mac Dillon, who for some time past has raced under the supervision of E. J. Smith. Mac Dillon did his early training at New Brighton under J. D. Smith. He has any amount of speed, but he is unreliable at the post. If Price can mend Mac Dillon’s ways at the barrier, then his connections can i be assured of more than one win later j in the season. Mac Dillon is a half- j brother to Eureka Boy; and Dark Girl.
