RAILWAY GRADE LOWERED
In the early hours of Sunday morning the new railway line above Caroline Bay, Timaru, which is five feet lower than the old main line, was tinked up, and the first train to Christchurch passed over it at 8.30 on Sunday morning. The work of lowering the grade has been carried on since September 26, and a daily average of 120 cubic yards of clay has been removed since. that date. The spoil has been principally used by the Harbour Board in the reclamation of waste land near the harbour, and the formation of new streets. When work began on the final stretch at 8 p.m. on Saturday, about eighty cubic yards of material remained to be removed, and there was about a chain of line to lay. The scene was lighted with acetylene flares and the work was concluded shortly after 4 a.m. A start will shortly be made to lower the portion on which the old main line now rests, to the new level. On the bay side a platform will be built where excursionists may alight.
