The discovery of a pest resiyibling the white pine borer was made in a thirty-year-old Pinus insignis tree in a private plantation at Dorie last week, and was handed to the Ashburton County inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson), who proi poses to send it to the Cawthorn Insti- | tute for identification. The discovery ■ was made when the tree was felled, • and it was found that one cone of a ! cluster of five was badly riddled with ; the borer, which had eaten its way into the centre. No other cones on ! the tree were attacked, however. A j fifteen-year-old shed built of Pinus i insignis. which stood nearby, was : closely examined, but no trace of ! borer could be found in the timber.
