RADIUM FOR CANCER
Conference Emphasises. Value. MEDICAL REPORT. LONDON, January 6. The radium conference has issued an important report emphasising the fresh possibilities of a cancer campaign, and insisting upon the value of the establishment of a large radium unit, containing at least five grammes of radium, valued at £60,000. “ There are definite grounds for hoping that by a combination of irradiation and surgery even cancer of the alimentary tract may be controlled,” the report states. “ In the hands of the inexperienced the use of radium in any form is dangerous. A -faulty estimate of the dosage required, or uneven distribution, may lead to gross destruction of the tissues and death, but the use of units of even the largest dimensions can be controlled by experts with perfect safety.” A 15-gramme unit is being established in Brussels.
