Christmas Distribution Discussed.

A meeting of the Women’s Unemployment Committee was held last night. The Mayoress, Mrs D. G. Sullivan, presided. Apologies were received from Mesdames Fraer, Machin, Todhunter, Roberts and Mr J. Roberts. The report of the cookery sub-com-mittee indicated that the total number of meals supplied to necessitous cases was 837, 449 to the staff, 388 outsiders, and 830 dinners were distributed to needy families. Sixty plum puddings were supplied to the Rotary Club. Forty-one Christmas boxes containing ham, green peas, new potatoes, tomatoes, cake, mince pies, almonds, muscatels and a cake of chocolate were delivered to unemployed girls. Thirtytwo New Year boxes containing ham, green peas, new potatoes, tomatoes, cake, egg, tea and sugar were also delivered. A Christmas dinner consisting of roast lamb, green peas, new potatoes, plum pudding, almonds, muscatels and chocolates was served. The sewing committee reported that 104 articles had been made and 81 re-' paired. Clothing had been distributed to 24 unemployed women and 25 parcels were distributed to needy families. Gifts of vegetables, fruit, jam jars and other goods had been received from Aunty Brown, Misses Belcher, “ Sunbeam ” Gardeners, Mr Strong, Mrs M’lntosh, Mrs Keith Hadfield, Mrs Kidson, Mrs Frudd, W. H. Harris and Co., Acetone Illuminating and Welding Co., Canterbury Frozen Meat Co., James Knight, New Zealand Coffee and Spice Co., Royds Bros, and Kirk, Miss Maddren, Mrs M. Gould, Mrs Hugh Acland, Mrs Martin, Mrs Munro, Miss M. Flutey, Weeks, Ltd., Messrs J. Ballantyne and Co., and Messrs Beath and Co. The examiners presented their report, showing that twelve trainees had been successful in passing the examination. Three trainees gained 70 per cent and over, and five 60 per cent. The hours of wqrk were arranged as follows: 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays A letter of thanks was sent to all those who had assisted in the delivery of meals to necessitous cases. The unemployment report indicated that the live register showed 161 had registered. Twenty-five had been placed in positions Ninety-two were employed in the centres. Receipts during the period totalled £463 14s and expenditure £316 13s 4d. The certificates of merit in connection with the cookery examination were presented by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs. A request was received from a number of unemployed women to wait on the committee. It was agreed to hear them.
