EASTER SPORTS.

Funds for the Kaikoura Fixture.

At a meeting of the general committee of the Kaikoura Athletic and Cycling Association, held on Thursday evening, the question of raising funds for the coming Easter meeting was discussed, and it was decided to devise ways and means of raising the sum of £SO. The club experienced a deficit financially on the iNTew Year meeting and hard work will be necessary to clear the deficit and ensure funds for the Easter meeting. Two South Island cycling championships will feature on the Easter programme, and with the other events an attractive programme will be offered. The resignation of Mr D. Doyle, one of the club’s handicappers, who is leaving the district, was accepted with regret. Dr R. L. Withers expressed thanks to the officials for the able manner in which the New Year meeting was conducted. Butterfishing. The continuous warm weather, allied to calm seas, has proved ideal for the popular sport of butterfishing and with small supplies of kelp available, good catches are being made. Local parties have secured up to seventy good fish in an afternoon and larger quantities have been netted by fishermen working the kelp with hand nets. The majority of the fishing launches have been on the slip during the holidays. The fishermen are able to operate freely, but the good prices realised immediately after the holidays have dropped again.
