ENGLISH PARK SPORTS
Varied Programme Arranged for To-night.
Indications point to & record attendance at English Park to-night when tho biggest sports carnival ever held there will take place. The promoters ha\'e provided a first class programme in which several thrilling and attractive events have been Introduced. A feature of the meeting will be a four-lap motorcycle race in which six experienced riders will compete. In a try-out last night the riders gave an indication that the race of two heats and a final will be a series of thrills from start to finish. Bert Garlick, Canterbury’s great axeman, has been given a big task in the two chopping events in being asked to concede a start of 40sec to some of his opponents. Garlick gave a great exhibition of chopping on Monday and the opportunity should not be lost to see the axemen chopping through the 14in logs. Cycle racing takes a prominent part on the programme, several handicap events and a five-miles scratch race will be decided. The nominations include L. Hill, the 100-mile Australasian road champion and South Island track champion, L. Pither, who ran Hill very close on Monday last, Joe l’Anson, H. Crofts and Ron and Bill Weir. The riders are first class wheelmen. Good entries from local teams have been received for the tug-of-war and there should be several good pulls before a decision is reached. The running events have drawn good fields, prominent runners from town and country having nominated. The New Zealand champion, D. E. Flanagan, is on the scratch mark in the 880yds handicap. Post entries will be received for the dancing event which will commence at 7.30 p.m. The sports will begin at 8 o’clock and special trams will leave Cathedral Square at frequent intervals for the park.
