THE FLOWER GARDEN. Stake any tall growing subjects. Remove any annuals that are finished. Dig and replant with Asters. Plant Zinnias. Be careful that the plants are well grown stuff. If the foliage of Liliums is turning brown, dust it with flowers of sulphur; also scatter some horticultural naphthalene on the soil and around the stem. The more tender bedding plants, such as Iresines, Alternantheras, Begonias, can be planted now. Plant Geums, Iceland Poppy, Pansies, Pentemons, Antirrhinums. Sow hardy annuals for autumn flowering. Poppies, Double Clarkia, Godetia, Candytuft, etc. Young Cineraria and Primula plants should now be shifted into four-inch pots. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Hoeing and working between standing crops are essential. Pinch the main shoots of Pumpkins, Marrows and Melons to induce lateral shoots. Make a sowing of the Bush Marrow. Cut the fruits for use as soon as large enough and before the seeds get firm. These are much nicer when they are not too large to boil whole. Make a sowing of Silver Beet. It transplants well and a few plants will keep quite a large household supplied. Replace Potatoes and Peas that are finished with all sorts of winter Cabbage and Leeks. Plant Celery in well-manured trench. Sow Lettuce, Radish, Turnips, Endive and all salads. Make final sowing of French or Butter Beans. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Spray for brown rot. Use wettable sulphur one pound to ten gallons, or lime-sulphur 1-125. Spray or dust vines with flowers of sulphur to control mildew. Spray with arsenate of lead for Pear and Plum leech and bronze beetle. Clear weeds around trees. Keep surface soil loose. Newly planted young trees can have the main growth stopped at about fifteen inches. Trees showing signs of silver blight should be cut and the wood burned. If peaches begin to fall, gather the crop; they are ripe enough.
