House-purchase has grown enormously in Britain. About 800,000 people are buying their houses and the building societies have advanced an average of £85,000,000 during the past three years. Out of an establishment of 250 motor vehicles at Scotland Yard, nearly 180 are reserved for the private use of high officials and senior officers, only j fifteen being allotted to the Flying j Squad.
