ACCEPTANCES.

Wellington Racing Club’s Meeting. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 13. Following are acceptances for the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting:

HANDICAPPING SYSTEM. Demand for Modification in N.S.W. While there is trotting there will always be growls about handicapping, says an Australian writer. When fields were started by seconds there was so much dissatisfaction that simultaneous starting from scratch and from behind scratch was adopted. For many years handicaps were allotted strictly in accordance with times run in winning, and in recent years there have been many instances of the errors of such a system. For a period extending over many weeks one horse or another monopolised whatever race it was decided to start him in, and the reward for any trainer who set out to make the good one break time was a hiding and the pleasure of taking even : money when next he ran. The New South Wales Trotting Club has developed a scheme whereby times are considered, but only in a scondary nature. A horse winning is certain of a 12yds penalty no matter what time is made, and on occasions the penalty is increased. In fact a straight-out system of handicapping is in vogue. For some time now this has been operating with success, but there is again an agitation to have the system modified. There have been cases of horses winning in restricted company in good style being asked to go off a backmark in open class events. The contention of the trainers is that by skipping class. races and taking on the open events they are penalising themselves sufficiently, and, although they do not say that their horses could not win off a back mark, their contention is that they should be first given an opportunity off the front mark. There is a lot of reason in the argument, too, and no doubt a little negotiation could set matters right. Certainly the club at all times is out to do the best for trotting, and its policy has never been to stifle genuine criticism from the men in the game, but rather to welcome it.
