BILLIARDS.

United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph-Copyright. (Received January 14, 4.15 p.m.) LONDON, January 13. In the billiards match, M’Conachy has scored 18,337 and Davis 14,195.

Bowling Mastered. Leyland and Wyatt soon got the mastery of the bowling after lunch,

both waiting for the right balls. Leyland was delightful on the leg side and with Wyatt made a sound partnership. Grimmett got one ball within inches of Leyland’s wicket when he was 32. Leyland then hit successive fours off Ironmonger. Wyatt was also aggressive, hitting one to square leg for six off Grimmett, and one to fine leg for four off Ironmonger, and making another powerful hit to square leg for six off Grimmel

The slow bowlers were becoming a luxury and M’Cabe replaced Ironmonger at 103. Leyland, who was then at 52, made successive straight drives off Grimmett for several fours. When 45 had been knocked off Grimmett, he was replaced by O’Reilly, but the scoring went on unabated. Wyatt secured his 50 in 100 minutes by superlative play. Wall came back when the total was 142. M’Cabe, in the slips, missed a hot catch from Wyatt, who reached 61 by hitting Wall to square leg for another sixer, his third. Leyland was just as confident, waiting for loose ones. At the tea adjournment the score stood at 154 for four wickets, Wyatt 61, Leyland 68. The partnership had saved England from an ugly situation. Partnership Broken. After afternoon tea there were repeated appeals for lbw by O’Reilly, but Wyatt and Leyland remained unconquered. Wyatt, making beautiful leg swings, reached 70 by a shot to leg, off Wall, for four. Leyland appreciated Ironmonger, driving him for four, reaching 83. When facing O'Reilly in the next over, Leyland was completely beaten. His was a bright patch, which unquestionably stemmed the early debacle. He had batted for 181 minutes and hit thirteen fours. He was never uneasy. The score was 186 for five when Paynter made his Australian test debut. Wyatt soon followed Leyland, hitting Grimmett straight to Richardson at long-off, after reaching 78. Grimmett’s first wicket cost 54. Wyatt showed a dogged and sound defence, combined with aggression. He batted for two hours and forty-four minutes. The score was 196 for six. Paynter opened confidently and soon ran into the twenties. M’Cabe replaced and Allen drove him through the covers for four, and then made a square cut for another four, 11 coming from the first over. Allen made four more, and then went out leg before to Grimmett. The attendance was 39,500, and the takings were £4OOO.
