THEFT OF OVER £7OO.
Labour Department’s Funds. OFFICIAL UNDER SUSPICION. Per Press Associate n. AUCKLAND, January 12. The theft of over £7OO of Government funds on account of the Labour Department in Auckland was discovered when the office of the Department reopened after the Christmas and New Year holidays. It .is stated that an official of the Department presented a cheque for over £7OO at the bank just before the official Christmas vacation. It was not until after the holidays that it was discovered that an unauthorised sum had been drawn from the account. The official under suspicion has not reported for duty since the resumption of work after the holidays, and he is believed to have left the country. It is understood that a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
