RELIEF WORKERS’ PAL
Large Sum Paid Out by River Trust. A total of £2508 5s has been paid out during the present week to 567 relief workers employed by the W aimakariri River Trust. Men engaged at M’Lean’s Island, Coutts Island, Stewart’s Gully and the Cam have benefited by the distribution of pay. “ The River Trust, in order to meet the position of the men and also to meet not only the Christmas pay but also the advance payment up to January 7, has made the pay-out in recognition of the work that has been carried out by the men during the period they have been on the construction work of the trust,” said Mr C. W. Heryey, secretary of the trust, this morning. “ Mr Harris, the resident engineer, has asked me to express his appreciation of the work of the men, and to state that satisfaction has been given in all of the gangs under his control. It has been an exceedingly busy week for the officials of the trust, but we would like to state that we have been pleased to be able to meet the men in the payments that have been made in advance. On behalf of the engineer and other officials, I desire to convey to all of the men working under the No. 5 scheme our appreciation of their services and our best wishes for the coming year.”
