SEASON’S MESSAGE.

Mayor Hopes for Happier Times. GENEROSITY OF THE PUBLIC. The unfailing generosity of the Christchurch public, the brave patience of the unemployed, and the hope for better and happier days are given prominence in the Christmas message issued by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) today.

“ With an estimated 30,000,000 of workless people in the world, all on or beneath the bread line, this Ch ristmas finds the people of the nations burdened with a dark anxiety and sorrow, from which our own citizens have not been spared,” the message states. “ The dawn is not yet; we are still in the shadows, and it is hard to extract comfort from such a situation, but here in Christchurch We can at least derive satisfaction by reflecting on the unfailing generosity and kindness of the public, and the brave patience with which the unemployed, their wives and families—the principal victims of the disaster—have endured their sufferings. “As Mayor of Christchurch, I am justly proud of the gallant part flayed by our people, both givers and receivers. I most earnestly hope that ere next Christmas comes to us, the people's load of sorrow, suffering and sacrifice will be lifted, and that peace and prosperity will have returned to us.

“ I thank our people for the help they have given me as their Mayor, in trying to deal with the unhappy situation; and in spite of all things I trust they will find happiness this Christmas, and continued courage to hope that the New Year will bring with it the dawn of happier days.”
