CYCLING CONTROL.

New Method of Starting to be Tried. The North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union met last evening, Mr W. J. Walter presiding. It was decided to send letters to the Rakaia and Cheviot Sports Clubs congratulating them upon the way their sports meetings had been conducted. The Rangiora R.S.A. Athletic Club wrote cancelling its affiliation with the centre. The chairman said that the cycling season had been opened at English Park on Monday. The meeting had been a great success, although lie had been disappointed at not seeing more cyclists in the procession. He thought the cycling and running had been the best he had seen on the park for many years. If the cyclists kept on riding that way the public would attend. There would be wood-chopping, cycling, running and dancing next Saturday, and he hoped the events would attract a large crowd. A rider had been fined 2s 6d for using bad language in a scratch race at English Park on Monday. Mr C. J. Sowden suggested that races should be started by the starter from the middle of the ground, the marksmen to hold a handkerchief over their heads when everything was clear. This would stop the scratch men having any advantage. It was decided to give the method a trial.
