The oldest inhabited house in Great Britain is the Fighting Cocks Inn, St Albans (Herts). The curious structure of early Saxon origin was built as a boathouse to an ancient monastery founded by King Offa about the year 795. A subterranean passage ran from the basement to the monastery. In the days when cockfighting was a favourite sport it was a popular meeting place. Hence the name “ The Fighting Cocks.”
