ASHBURTON NEWS.

No Inquiries for Harvesting. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, December 2i. With reference to a motion passed by the Ashburton County Council yesterday regarding the prospects of a heavy harvest and that the Unemployment Board should not consider any further schemes of work which might take men away from the harvest fields, it was stated by a labour agent to day that no inquiries had yet been made through the bureau for this class of work. The cutting of oats is proceeding, but there is only a limited area in the county and farmers do not require any extra labour. The wheat crops are making good headway and it will be three or four weeks yet before they are ready for reaping. Christmas Party. The annual Christmas party of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held in the Tancred Street Hall last evening, there being a large gathering of members, their wives and children. Gifts were distributed to the children by Father Christmas. An impromptu programme of items was given by several of the children and a number of selections were given by the Strollers’ Orchestra. Members of the lodge and friends were later entertained at supper. Personal. Mr G. C. Bonnington arrived in Ashburton this morning from Sydney on a visit to his parents, Mr and Mrs H. E. Bonnington, Wills Street. Mr R. M. M’Gregor, agricultural instructor at the Ashburton High School, left to-day to join the Rangitane en route to Scotland. •
