“AERIAL".

A Christmas Day Broadcast by His Majesty.

REBROADCAST IN N.Z. In connection with the opening, this month, of the new Empire short-wave station at Daventry, England, referred to in these notes in last Wednesday’s •‘Star”, it is now understood that the 8.8. C. has practically completed its arrangements for the establishment of two-way radiophone conversations between London and the outposts of the Empire on Christmas Day. The most interesting part of the affair will be the fact that the whole programme of interEmpire conversations will be put on the air through Daventry, and will, it is hoped, be audible, not only by those able to tune in Daventry direct, but also by listeners to the four YA stations, which will carry out a rebroadcast of Daventry. The tentative programme will include speech with ships at sea, as well as the exchange of messages with Empire representatives in Edinburgh,. Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dublin, Belfast, St John's (Newfoundland), Quebec, Montreal, Niagara, Calgary, Vancouver, Wellington. (N.Z.), Sydney, Cape Town and Gibraltar. Appropriate songs will be given by the 8.8. C. chorus, the programme being introduced by a suitable prologue. The broadcast is timed, so it is now stated, to commence at 1400 hours G.M.T. (which is 2 p.m. in London) on Christmas Day. Owing to the fact that the actual, transmission by Daventry will, for all practical purposes, be •audible instantaneously all over the world (the actual circuit of the globe will be accomplished in one-seventh of a second by the radio waves), the equivalent time to 1400 hours Greenwich Mean Time will be 2 a.m. on Boxing Day in. New Zealand, summer time in this country resulting in the time difference between New Zealand and Greenwich being almost exactly 12 hours, with New Zealand in the lead—half a day ahead. According to an announcement in this week’s “ Radio Record,” the N.Z.B.C. has arranged for the four YA stations to open up for rebroadcasting purposes. The broadcast will last for approximately one hour, and will conclude with a speech by his Majesty the King. The Regular Schedule. The first of the regular daily programmes by the Daventry short-wave station (on 25.28 metres) will take place on Monday, December 19, and will be audible here from 9.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. on that day, with succeeding programmes daily at the same times. (The times given are N.Z. summer time.) Details of the programmes will be published daily in the “ Star ” and Monday night’s programme (which is published below) will include the time signal from London’s ” Big Ben ”, a pianoforte recital, dance music, news. The Testing Period. In a communication on this subject the 8.8. C. states: “ During the testing period, which will last some months, the same programme will be transmitted on alternative wavelengths to each zone for which more than one aerial array has been provided, in order to obtain as much technical information as possible. At a later stage, however, it should not be necessary to continue this practice, and the best wavelength available for broadcasting will be chosen in accordance with the season of the year and other conditions. In the case of the Australian and New Zealand zone, only one aerial array Iras been provided, since it is anticipated that the optimum wavelength for evening reception will remain the same for all seasons of the year. The present wavelength allocation should be regarded as tentative.” Goodwill Broadcast. With reference to the goodwill broadcast by the President and the Presidentelect of U.S.A., through station WCKY, Covington, Kentucky (referred to in yesterday’s cables), the broadcast should, if etheric conditions permit, be audible here from about 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday. The frequency, 1490 k.c., is equivalent to 201.3 metres. Oorrespondenc e. To “ZL3DK”: Your bright and merry card conveying the season’s greetings received. Your sentiments are much appreciated, and are heartily reciprocated.—“ Aerial ”. WEEK-END PROGRAMMES.
