The electric eel is allied to the catfish. It is able to give a severe electric shock of from 400 volts upwards. When it is handled, or even lightly touched, a succession of shocks can be given over a considerable period without exhausting the fish, probably for protection and to kill its prey. Inns named The Swan with Two Necks should reallv be The Swan with Two Nicks. All swans on the Thames are the property either of the King or of the Vintners’ Company. Royal birds are marked, on their bills, with three nicks, or notches; those belonging to the Vintners have two.
