Prospecting Expedition to Seek Gold. (Special to the “ Star.”> ASHBURTON, December 15. The weekly meeting of the Ashburton Unemployment Committee was held this afternoon, the Deputy-Major, Mr R. Kerr, presiding. It was decided to draw up schemes in connection with the proposed gold prospecting expedition at the head of the Wilberforce. Regarding the Christmas period payments, it was decided that the week ending December 24 should be held to be a stand-down week, and that two weeks’ pay, due on January 7, be paid on December 23. the following week, will be paid out fore Christmas. Motor-cycle Club. The Ashburton Motor-cycle Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, when Mr G. T. Clarke presided. The chairman reported on arrangements made at a conference, held in Christchurch, between the Pioneer Sports Club and the Ashburton Club, in connection with the grass track meeting to be held at Ashburton on Saturday, January 14. It was agreed to adopt all the arrangements made, and sub-committees were set up to complete matters. Presentations to Teacher*. Mrs Bolton, who is retiring after twelve years’ service as assistant in the infant department of the Borough School, was met by the pupils yesterday and presented with a silver teapot. The gift was handed over by the head master (Mr T. B. Haydon). Mr H. J. Chapman, who is retiring after twenty-six years’ service on the teaching staff of the Ashburton East School, was the recipient of an envelope containing a cheque at to-day’s breakup ceremony. The presentation was made by the chairman (Mr W. Kerr), who referred to the keen interest Mr Chapman had always taken in the school. In reply, Mr Chapman urged the children to keep up the traditions of the institution and presented each of the sixth standard pupils with a piece of the leather strap he used in the school.
