BRILLIANT TENNIS
E. D. Andrews Defeats N. R. Wilson. (Special to the “ Star.") MASTERTON. December 16. Some splendid play was witnessed by the hundreds of spectators who assembled at the courts of the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club to watch exhibition tennis matches by E. D. Andrews, N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington), 1. A. Seay (Canterbury), and J. Lowry (Hawke's Bay). Results were:—* Seay beat Lowry, 6-3, 6-4. Andrews beat Wilson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Wilson and Seav beat Andrews and Lowry, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The single in which Andrews met and defeated Wilson, produced. as might have been expected, the finest play of the day. Both players opened badly, with a good many double faults, but Andrews made better use of his opportunities and won the first set rather easily, 6-2. The second set was a splendid contest, particularly in its second half, in which Wilson made a great recovery. After being down 1-4, he won five games in succession, and took the set 6-4, chiefly by clean, hard driving and strong sideline shots. The final set of the match was not up to the standard of the second, partly on account of a freshening breeze. Andrews won it decisively, 6-1. In the doubles match, two Cambridge Blues, Andrews and Lowry, were seen playing as partners. Though the honours of individual play probably went to Andrews, Wilson and Seay combined better than their opponents, and, after being beaten in the opening set, won the match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. There were brilliant rallies at times, with all four players effectively in action. Wilson missed a good many easy chances to kill. Seay, a highly skilled though less powerful player, was dependable throughout. RANKING MATCHES. T. W. Patterson last night successfully challenged L>. F. Glanville for fourth place on the Canterbury ranking list, winning S-6, 6-1. Steady baseline play was occasionally varied by deep drives to Glanville's backhand, on which Patterson came in for winners. There was a great deal of half-court play, but Patterson kept the better length. W. It. Robinson lias challenged A. H. Barnett for second place on the list, and they will play at 4.30 this afternoon at Wilding Park. 7n ladies’ ranking matches Miss Melva Wake had to go full out in an S-6 set to heat Miss Thelma Poole, who is an improving player. Last evening Miss Edna Rudkin retained fourth place on the Canterbury list by beating Miss Xoeline Bishop fi-4, 4-6, 6-2 in a very exhausting match marked bv very long, cautious rallies.
