GENEROUS GIFT.
Donor of Art Gallery Makes Final Payment. As a result of the great generosity of Mr R. E. McDougall, the new Art Gallery has become the property of the city without a penny encumbrance. The total expenditure of the Art Gallery was £31,720, and when a statement of income and expenditure was presented to Mr McDougall showing a debit of £IBBS he readily endorsed a cheque for that amount.
The cheque was received far the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., this morning, and in expressing the public’s appreciation of Mr McDougall’s generosity he said that the city now possessed one of the finest art galleries in the Dominion and it was particularly pleasing that it was free from financial encumbrance. He understood thar Mr McDougall desired that the Art Gallery should be referred to as the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, and the Mayor considered that the council would take steps to meet the donor's wish in this matter.
