WORK AT HOSPITAL.

A Protest Against Spring Cleaning at Relief Rates.

A letter has been sent by the Canterbury Industrial Association of Workers to the Hospital Board and the Minister of Employment protesting against the action of the board in having its wards painted and general spring cleaning done in the Public Hospital under the No. 5 scheme at relief rates of wages. The board previously renovated the Waltham Orphanage under the No. 5 scheme, and the Industrial Association then protested against this, and urged that the board invoke the aid of the building subsidy and pay award rates of wages, as such work was held to be ordinary maintenance work. The board replied that consideration would be given to the association’s representations. The association contends that the board, in using the No. 5 scheme, is lessening the chances of painters securing employment at award rates.
