Seamen and Shipowners Reach Agreement. EFFECT ON WATERSIDERS. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTpN, November 1. The Seamen’s Union has decided to accept the new conditions as laid down by the Shipowners’ Federation. This decision was reached by a national ballot, the result of which was made known to-day. • The seamen’s verdict will have an important effect on the attitude of freezing workers and watersiders towards new agreements. STILL UNSETTLED. Freezing Workers’ Dispute at Wellington. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 1. Although a conference lasting several hours was held in Wellington to-day between representatives of the employers and employees in the freezing workers’ dispute no settlement was reached. It is understood that although no move has so far been made another attempt to bring the parties together will be made shortly. It was recently suggested to the Hon A. Hamilton, from an outside source, that he should endeavour to bring both sides together at a more or less informal conference to discuss the whole question and attempt to reach a settlement. The Minister arranged for holding a conference, and representatives of both sides came to Wellington to-day from all over New Zealand. Both sides met without prejudice to the case of either party. Although the points at issue were gone into very carefully it was found impossible to reach a basis of settlement. It is understood that failure to reach an agreement at present will not prevent further discussions, as the feeling on both sides is stated to be good. Both employers’ and workers’ representatives remained in Wellington tonight.
