SCHOOL ATHLETICS.
Meeting Brings Keen Competition.
STRONG TEAMS IN FIELD.
The best athletic talent of the secondary schools of Christchurch was brought into competition this afternoon at Hagley Park, when the annual interschool athletic championships were held. Christ’s College, who gained the championship in 1922, the first year of the tournament, have had an unbroken line of successes over ten years. College again had a strong team in the field this year, but there was no lack of ability in the teams from the other schools, and College were offered keen competition. The weather for this afternoons event was fine and warm, with a fairly strong nor’-west wind blowing. The teams competing were from: Christ's College, St Andrew’s College, St Bede's College, Technical College, Boys’ High School, and West Christchurch Boys’ High School.
The first surprise was sprung by St Bede’s, who claimed the 880yds championship, their first string, E. Malley, one of the smaller competitors in the race, setting a new record of 2min 3. l-ssec, this time being three-fifths of a second better than that of H. P. Johnstone, of Christ’s College, five years ago. Matthews, of Technical, did not finish in a place, being unable to foot it with the flying St Bede’s boy. Results:— 81VIO! ITUTI. 220 YARDS. (Record: 22 4-s«ec, T. A. Oresson, Christ’s College, 1931.) C. A. Tweedie (8.H.5.) 1 T. A. Harpur (Christ’s College) . 2 B. Tapley (Christ’s College) .. 3 The field got away to a splendid start, and, running with the wind, sprinted down the track almost in lins. Cropp (St Andrew’s), Harpur and Tapley had the lead until the last twenty-five yards. Tweedie, finishing like a shot from a gun, then went to the front, and had a lead of half a yard from Harpur at the tape. Tapley was only a foot away in third place. Time—23see. 880 YARDS. (Record: 2min 3 4-ssec, H. B. Johnstone, Christ’s College, 1927.) E. Malley (St Bede’s College) .. 1 A. D. Le May (Christ’s College) . 2 A. O. Rankin (8.H.5.) 3 Taking the lead 160 yards from home, Malley put up a sensational sprint that carried him along to victory in the record time of 2min 3 1 -ssec. Considering the heavy track. Malley’s effort was of outstanding merit. The early running was made by Le May, of Christ’s College, and Matthews (Technical), who were well beaten when it came to finishing it out with the surprise packet from St Bede’s. Rankin (Boys’ High School) got up to beat Matthews for third place.
