Pasting the bowling, the Englishmen gave the Australians a taste of their real form to-day, when they met a combined Australian eleven and piled up 359 runs for the ■ loss of three wickets. Sutcliffe and the Nawab of Pataudi were associated in a great partnership, compiling 298 runs between them. The Nawab scored his second century in succession. The weather was ideal and the wicket perfect. England won the toss and elected to bat. Leyland went out to M’Cabe in the second over. The Nawab of Pataudi and Sutcliffe, playing carefully, topped the century. There were many changes in the bowling. Bradman. Halcombe, M’Cabe, Martin and Evans being tried, but they did not show much sting. Play generally was slow, but \vas relieved by smart fielding, especially Bradman's, who returned marvellously, and by the artistic strokes of the Nawab of Pataudi. Sutcliffe was solid and slow, though he made attractive strokes all round the wicket. He scored 169 in 235 minutes. lie hit one six and sixteen fours. The Nawab of Pataudi, who was extremely strong on the leg, gave another fine display, using his wrists in most of his strokes .without apparent effort. His century came in 180 minutes. He hit eleven fours. Hammond gave his usual display of forceful defence, at times going halfway down the pitch to meet slow balls. His footwork was beautiful to watch. Ames did not have sufficient time to show his qualities. M’Cabe was the best of the bowlers, the batsmen treating him with great respect. The Western Australians were well pasted. The fielding was excellent. The attendance was 11,000, and the gate was £BB3. The gate is insured against rain on Saturday under £2B premium for £4OO on ten points of rain. Scores:— ENGLAND.
