BIG CYCLE RACE.

Limit Men take First and Second. AUCKLAND MAN FASTEST. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. October 8. The Palmerston North to Wellington road race was held to-day. Eightyfour riders started. There were splendid weather conditions, except in the early stages, when head winds made the going hard. From Himitangi, however, the wind was following and good time was made. Two limit men, Meachin (Wellington) and Mutch * (Palmerston North) were never headed and finished first and second respective!}'. The next in was C. Flett (Wellington), 25min, who just beat L. Sowerby (Wellington), 20min. The limit men were oti 45min. Meachin’s actual time was shr 21min 31 2-ssec. The placings were:— P. Meachin, Wellington (45min), ohrs 28min 312-ssec 1 A. Lalolis, Auckland, ohrs Omin 41sec. Scuffle at Start. (Special to the " Star.”) WELLINGTON, October S. Meachen, the winner of the Palmerston to Wellington cycle race, is a promising boy. He looked a winner from Levin onwards, and won by 6A minutes. Flett, the veteran rider, staged a come-back to get third. There was a sensational scuffle at the start of the race, where Dwight and Mr Webber, the handicapper, got into grips, because Dwight was not allowed to start after competing in the Round the Gorges race. Lalolis rode a steady race to get fastest time, but Robinson was very unlucky. Paparua Club’s 25-Mile Event. The Paparua Cycling Club held a twenty-five mile road race this afternoon, starting and finishing on the Main South Road at Islington. Forty riders started, with S. A. Jordan and L. W. Hill on the scratch mark, conceding a limit of 6min. The five mile block was in splendid order. M’Kaslcell won an exciting sprint by a length from Slack. L. W. Hill finished 28se c behind the winner. Hill registered fastest time. Placings were: E. A. M’Kaskell (3Jmin), time 65min 52sec 1 R. E. Slack (3Jmin), 65min 52 l-ssec 2 S. North (sJmin), 67min 37 2-ssec 3 S. H. Hampton (3imin), 65min 52_ C.
