GARDENING SCHEME.

Meeting of Local Allotment Committee. A meeting of the Christchurch Garden Allotment Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Mr M. J. Barnett presiding. The chairman reported that the subcommittee was working "on the conditions for the garden competition. A number of men had been asking for particulars of the competition in order that they might know on what lines to Mr W. W. Scarff asked if a man not growing potatoes would be taken into consideration in the competition. Mr B. G. Goodwin thought that he should be admitted to the competition, as a number would not grow potatoes. The chairman concurred in this view. Points should be granted for rotation, cultivation, neatness and the varieties of crops. The financial statement showed that cash in hand from the sale of seeds totalled £22 Os 9d, and the committee owed £27 9s 7d for the purchase of seeds and manures. The grant from the Unemployment Board had not yet been received. It was agreed to supply applicants for j potatoes with seed at cost, and the

chairman and secretary were authorised to purchase the necessary supplies. The Christchurch Drainage Board advised that the following pumping ststtion sections were available for garden allotment:—Chelsea Street, 29 perches; Woodham Road, 33 perches; Smith Street, Woolston. 32 perches; St John Street 24 perches; Westenra Terrace, 16 perches; and Harrison Street, 10 perches. It was decided to thank the board for its assistance, and to make arrangements for the allotment of the sections. The Acting-Minister of Employment, the Hon Adam Hamilton, wrote stating that while it was not possible to assist 1 in all cases, the board had resolved to make a grant of £lO to the committee towards the cost of purchasing seeds. The Government and the board, added Alt Hamilton, appreciated greatly the valuable voluntary service which was being performed by the committee. The chairman reported that to date there had been 940 applications for scc-ds. Supervisors were still required for the Lin wood, Avonside, Waltham and city areas. Arrangements’were made to have the gardens in the districts mentioned, and also in the St Alartins district, visited by members of tj'e committee.
