THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Gatherings Held in Town ant Suburbs. St Paul’s Guild. At the vicarage, Papanui, the Rev W. H. and Mrs Orbell entertained a number of friends at “ flag 500.” The winners were Mrs Corby, Mr and Mrs Syme, Mesdames Moncrief, and Nettleton, and Miss Guest. The supper arrangements were in charge of Mesdames Somerset, Church and Tomkies, assisted by Airs Wilson and Aliss Heywood. Bridge and “ 500 ” Evening. To assist the pavilion fund of the Waimairi Tennis Club, Mrs Agar and Miss Keeper organised a bridge and “ 500 ” evening at the Elmwood Bowling Club’s pavilion. An enjoyable evening was spent. The winner of the bridge was Mrs Norrie, with Mrs Wilson winner of the consolation prize. The “ 500 ” winners were Mr and Mrs Moor and Mrs Radford; and consolation prize winners were Mesdames E. Tullett, W. Spcirs and D. Moore. At the home of Mrs C. H. Johnstone, Walford Street, Papanui, a farewell afternoon was held yesterday in honour of Mrs Frank Atkin, who will leave shortly to reside in Timaru. Mrs Johnstone received the guests in a frock of black and scarlet crepe de chine. Mrs Atkin wore a becoming frock of brown charmelaine, with a hat to match In a short speech Mrs A. S. Williams referred to the esteem in which Mrs Atkin was held by her many friends, and on behalf of the ladies present presented Mrs Atkin with a set of crystal goblets and jug to match. Mrs Atkin suitably responded. During the afternoon a word-building competition was won by Mrs Davis. The guests present were:—Mesdames White, Hope, Piper, Black, Simons, Faris, Rogers, Bryce, Davis and .Williams. Successful Dance. A successful carnival dance was held n the Winton Street Hall on Thursday evening. Miss Garrick and Mr W. Cashmere gave an exhibition fox-trot. On Wednesday evening a concert, organised by Mr James Collins, visited the Christchurch Public Hospital and entertained the patients of Ward 7. Those who contributed items were:— Instrumental quartette numbers, Mr Tom Mayne and his instrumentalists; songs, Miss Daphne Wade and Messrs David M’Gill and Lawrence Campbell; humorous elocutionary numbers, Mr James Laurenson, and ventriloquist items by Mr Richards. Miss Joan Sendall was the accompanist.
