Comment from Course,

(Special to. the “ Star.”) WINGATUI, October S. The weather was fine and warm and there was a large attendance to-day. Morena was incorrectly given as an acceptor for the Waikari Hurdles at the club’s offices on Friday. There was a field of five. Antrim Boy (£l7B 10s) was a slightly better favourite than Captain’s Gift (£175). Captain’s Gift led from Antrim Boy until they, reached the straight. The pair cleared the last hurdle together. Captain’s Gift

then drew ahead again, but the big weight stopped him and Antrim Boy, ridden by the Riccarton horseman. D. O’Connor, won nicely. Silver Salver was a poor third: Irish Lancer was again inclined to be troublesome at the post for the Kaikorai Handicap, but he was placed very wide out and was one of the first away. Always well placed, he drew clear at the top of the straight and won decisively from Flower and Pink Paper. The last-named paid a useful third dividend. Irish Lancer is a handsome English importation, and if he mends his manners might do well. He certainly looks a racehorse. Flower carried £206 10s and was favourite. Irish Lancer, sixth choice, carried £lO9 10s. Fleeting Glance was one of the leaders at the home turn but stopped badly. The field of six gave a lot of trouble at the post in the Shorts Handicap. Last . March the favourite, carrying £359, was last away and remained there to the straight. Hula Belle attempted to lead all the way, but was caught near home and beaten by Blue Metal, the second favourite (£229 10s). Fair Weather was third. The Riccarton jockey, A. H. Eastwood, rode the winner. Mount Boa, a hot favourite, carrying £543, won the Ranfurly Handicap, but looked to be rather lucky to beat Some Toff, who got shut in in the straight but came very fast when finally he got clear. L. J. Ellis, on Mount Boa, rode his fifth winner at the fixture. The Sun refused to gallop when the barrier lifted, but eventually followed the field.

At the request of the starter, the Judicial Committee heard a charge against C. W. Brodie of misconduct at the post when riding Some Good in the Taioma Handicap on Thursday. After hearing the evidence of Brodie and W. H. Jones, who rode Some Good at Ashburton and Geraldine, the committee accepted Brodie’s explanation. Silver Scorn was an odds-on favourite for the Dunedin Guineas. She lay in behind the pacemaker Arden’s Beauty until the straight had been entered, then took charge and won with her ears pricked. Pier record to date is three starts for three wins. She had been suffering from seasonal trouble and her owner, trainer and breeder, Mr G. Murray Aynsley, said that she was better to-day, but was not as well as he would have liked her to be. However, she was quite well enough to account for 'the opposition in the Guineas. Rocket dropped back to second last at the home turn, but was running on again in fourth position. June the Third looked home in the Dominion Handicap when the Austral-ian-bred Southdown put in a brilliant finish to win by a length. His stablemate, Guarantee, the winner of the M’Lean Stakes, was scratched. Southdown is by the young sire Rampion, who defeated Limerick in the Australia Jockey Club’s Derby. Half Note, £299 10s, was favourite. Southdown was fourth choice with £137 10s. Filosol was fourth favourite, carrying £230 in an excellent betting race. He led throughout in the Telegraph Handicap and won nicely from Water Power, who just beat Some Toff for second. Some Toff again got shut in in the straight. Adelphi was favourite. carrying £392. He shared the lead with the winner on entering the straight but stopped.

TOTALISATOR FIGURES. The totalisator handled £10,364 10s, compared with £8416 on the second day last year. The total- for the meeting was £17,364, compared with £17,47!) 10s in 1931, when two separate Saturday meetings were held.
