Championship Won by H. J. Croft’s. 36-MILE ROAD RACE. The South Island road championship was held to-day at Southbridge over a thirty-six miles course. The event, which was conducted by the Southbridge Athletic Club, attracted seventy-five nominations, including the best riders in the South Island. The scratch team comprised:—H. J. Crofts, 11. G. Watson, W. .J. Lamberton, " • ®»r and L. W. Hill, these riders conceding a limit of 16min to U. J. Wilson, of Waimate, a veteran of fifty-two years of age. Dast season’s South Island champion was B. w. Hill, of New Brighton. The thirty-six miles course, six times round a six miles block, was in good order. G. J. Wilson (16min) did not start. At six miles. Mallet. Vincent, King and Jones (13 min) were in the lead. The scratch men were llmin lCsec behind the leaders. Watson (scratch) knocked some spokes out of his wheel and retired. The scratch men had gained only 2min 45sec on' the front men at twelve mile \ Pope (llmin) was going well by himself 2min behind the leaders. With half the distance covered, Vincent, Mallet and Jones were in the lead. King having spilled. Pope still holding his place behind the leaders. Wilson (12min), M’Alister (llmin), O’Reilly (Smin), Bing (9min), Hack (lOmin), Kaan (9min), Dunlop (Bmin) and Dalv < B min) were riding well, Smin behind the leaders. Speirs (Gmin). O’Brien (smin>, Burnan (Dunedin) (Smin), M’Kaskell (6min) and Bearman (6min) were oirniji behind the limit riders. W. Crofts, Pearce. Ritchie and Carr (off the Smin mark) were l}min in front of the scratch men, who were Bmin 40sec in the rear.

With twelve miles to go, the leaders were still the same, with a big hunch 2min 25sec behind. The back-markers were still 7min 20sec behind Mallet, Jones and Vincent.

Final Lap. With six miles to go, Jones and Mallet were in the lead, 40sec in front of Griffiths, Ding, Hack, O’Reilly, M’Alister, Daly, Dunlop and Pope. Two and a half minutes later, O'Brien, Burnan, Hampton and Bearman passed. Welsh. Fransden, Lohrey and Jordan were ?f^, rly . 2min further back. Bamberton, Hill, H. J. Crofts, Austin, W. T. AMATEUR CYCLING.

Canterbury Centre Holde Championship.

The thirty-mile Canterbury amateur championship, under the control of the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre, was held to-day on a course commencing from the Junction Hotel, Halswell, to Jtolleston and through Dincoln and Prebbleton. finishing on the Dincoln Road. A field of twenty-two riders contested the race. The scratch men. G. R. Giles, A. Hansen and W. A. Christensen, conceded a start of llmin to the limit men. Result:— K.
