RACING NOTES.

1 ® SI SI @ ® ffl M @ IS [U @ SI ® @3 ID @ EE! HHH J-JANDICAPS for the New Zealand Cup'are due on Monday week. * * * * Acceptances for the first day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting close at 8 p.m. on Monday. * * * * Acceptances for the Kurow Jockey Club’s meeting w’ill close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. * * * * Negotiations for the sale of Topthorn to an Auckland owner have been broken off, for the time being, at least. MAKING GOOD PROGRESS. The Kilbroney filly Mahkill is hitting out much more freely at Ellerslie than she did a few weeks ago, and is also carrying a brighter appearance. She has not raced since last autumn, but if she continues to go on as at present should be in good order for the approaching meetings. Mahkill is a big upstanding filly, and that will be a lot in her favour when required to race in the large fields that usually contest hack events around Auckland. R. W, KING WRITES. Writing to a friend by the mail which arrived from Sydney yesterday, R. W. King said that Silver Ring was recovering from his muscular trouble and he expected him to make a bold bid for success in the Camellia Stakes at Rosehill (to-day). Grecian Prince had a rough trip over, but landed all right except for a little stiffness. King said that Nightmarch was doing extra well, and that he expected the son of Night Raid to go well in the Chelmsford Stakes. As we know now, Nightmarch started favourite for that race, but was apparently anchored by the heavy going and finished last. HAS N.Z. ANCESTORS. St Valorey, winner of the Brisbane Cup in June, is being sent to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup, in which he has Bst 51b. He had Bst 101 bin the Brisbane race, and ran the two miles in 3min 24 3-4 sec. He is a six-year-old gelding by Valais from La Neive, by Bebington. La Neive was one of the best mares of her time in Queensland. Bebington, her sire, was New Zealand bred. His name appears in very few pedigrees. He was by Birkenhead (son of Orme) from Siesta, by Traducer from Hammock, an English mare by Orest (son of Orestes). Asan, dam of La Neive, was by Bundook, son of Carbine. J. J. Kahl, owner of St Valorey, has leased the gelding to the Queensland owner, Mr James Clark, who raced Tangalooma in Victoria. For the V.R.C. October Stakes, J. Holt saddled up Eurythmic and Tangalooma. Eurythmic, ridden by F. Dempsey, was at long odds-on, but Tangalooma, ridden by a NewiZealander, the late Hugh Cairns, beat him by half a head. The honours of that finish were wuth Cairns. AT WANGANUI. K. Voitre will ride Pegged Exchange (Paper Money— ; Epitaph) in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui next Saturday. In the same event, R. M’Tavish will be on Quietly (Chief Ruler — Timid). In a gallop over half a mile at Trentham on Tuesday, Quietly beat Pegged Exchange by a length and a half in the good time of 49 l-ssec. IN AT WINGATUI.

Riccarton-trained horses nominated for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month include: Hurlingham, Rocket, Fleeting Glance, Hunting Call, Silver Scorn, _Arro#maid, Ringing Cheer, Tout le Mond, Cricket Bat, Don Jose, Muff, Shatter, Adelphi, Ranelagh, Silvox and Cheap Mone^'. GAINE CARRINGTON.

Gaine Carrington is now regarded in Sydney as having a mortgage on the A.J.C. Derby, and if that proves to be correct, his Melbourne Cup prospects will be very highly regarded. Winning the Derby in Sydney or Melbourne would make no difference to his impost in the great two mile event, the conditions of which provide that the victor in either of those classics must carry in the Cup not less than weight-for-age. Gaine Carrington has that weight—7st 61b—already. A good three-year-old is ever a dangerous proposition in the Melbourne Cup. The race has been run seventy-two times and has been won on twenty occasions by a three-year-old. In the old days before the 6st 71b minimum, some fancy imposts were carried to victory by horses of this age. For example, Banker won with sst 41b, Grand Flaneur with 6st, Lantern with 6st 31b, and Briseis with 6st 41b. Seven three-year-olds have won with 7st 61b or more. Newhaven scored all the way with 7st 131 b, and Prince Foote was successful with 7st 81b. Aurum at three years finished third with Bst 61b. LATER ON. The two Auckland hacks, Royal Gallant and Marching Song, have not been overtaxed since they last appeared in public, but W. Ryan is giving them the right kind of work to prepare them for events ahead. Royal Gallant never carries any surplus condition, but he is a wiry customer, who always reproduces his track form in a race. Few hacks racing at the present time have more speed than the Top Gallant gelding, and his prospects during the next few months appear good. So far, Marching Song has not had the necessary racing to enable him to compete successfully against the better-seasoned hacks; still, his speed is undoubted, and his turn may come later on. PROMISING JUVENILES. W. Kemp’s pair of young horses, Supreme Ruler, by Chief Ruler from Miss Ethel, and Chief Emerald, by Chief Ruler from Queen Emerald, are beginning to show improved speed at Ellerslie, especially the former, who is now three years old. Both these youngsters were exercised at the barrier and behaved like experienced horses, jumping away very quickly on each occasion. Supreme Ruler is an attractive-looking gelding, and though he has never raced, his smooth style of galloping denotes speed, and he should develop into a really good sort. Chief Emerald has also shown pace over a furlong or two, and later on will be seen out in two-year-old contests. IN REGULAR WORK AGAIN. Imamint is again in regular work at Ellerslie, though her tasks at present are restricted to easy pacing, as she will not be required to race for some time yet. This mare had to be easedin her work just prior to the Paku-

ranga meeting and was not at her best when she contested the Sylvia Park Handicap. Consequently she failed to show her customary speed. Imamint thrives on a light preparation and J. Gray den should soon have her back to her best racing condition again. HE “ DUNNO.” The Maori boy, J. Webby, apprenticed to the New Zealand owner-trainer A. "D. Webster, has taken literally the good advice of his master about the wiles of Sydney. He was warned to be careful of all strangers. He makes no mistakes, for even when an official, asked his name he replied according to plan, “ Dunno.” He has made it serve on all occasions, so far with success to himself. At Moorfield, Webby was injured through a horse he was on colliding with a concrete wall. He refused to go to hospital, as he had riding engagements at Gosford the next day, and in spite of rather severe injuries duly fulfilled them. WON SEVEN LAST SEASON. The Tiger performed excellently last season, winning seven events out of the thirteen he contested, while he was second on another occasion. He has been entered for the Durie Hack Handicap, six furlongs, in which he is top-weight with 9.13, and the Flying Handicap, of similar distance, in which he is weighed at 7.12, at Wanganui next week. This horse was taken to Auckland for the Great Northern meeting and ran unplaced in his two efforts and he has not started since then. However, he seems to race well when fresh, for he was not started from February last till May, when he won over five furlongs at the Egmont winter meeting. In the Durie Handicap he has to concede weight to several smart hacks and will need to be at his best to win. RACING FIXTURES. September 22, 24—Wanganui J.C. Septembe*. 22, 24—Geraldine R.C.
